Chapter Ten

“Your parents?” I hissed.

“Dax, what are you doing back here?” his father demanded in a worryingly flat voice.

He was a man of relatively short stature, with a wide neck and a bit of a belly, but he was just as pale as Dax and Adi, with big dark eyes and thin, almost nonexistent lips. He also fixed me with a death stare and looked me up and down as if I were a leper.

“You’d better go,” Dax muttered to me. “I’d come with you if I could.”

“Young man, you’re not going anywhere,” his mom said in the same shrill voice. “We haven’t heard from you for months, and now you return back here with a whole group of degenerates?”

“Watch it, lady.” Demi scowled.

“How come we didn’t notice them?” Indira muttered to me quietly.

“My tiger senses didn’t even get a whiff of them,” I replied under my breath. “They must have used a charm to cloak themselves.”

“We’ll have to keep that in mind, going against charmers,” Indira commented dryly as she eyed Dax’s mother.

Their father opened his mouth to say something to us, but his teenage daughter casually interrupted him.

“Get out of here, guys.” Adi just rolled her eyes as she turned to the girls and me and puffed on her vape pen. “We’ll deal with them.”

We didn’t need to be told twice, and the four of us piled quickly into my Mustang. Dax’s parents started to argue, the mother especially, but then the scowling siblings jumped in, and the girls and I hightailed it away from Dax’s place while they were distracted.

It would’ve been cool if Dax had been able to come with us on our breaking and entering mission, but I totally understood why he felt the need to stay. His parents seemed overbearing and completely disinterested all at the same time, and dealing with that type of conflicting energy was probably a lot of pressure.

Plus, it was probably nice for him to see his sister again. Adi talked a lot of shit but, just like her big brother, she was a good person beneath all the bravado.

“So…” I said as we started to make our way out of the L.A. suburbs. “New Orleans?”

As if on cue, my cell phone suddenly rang loudly in my pocket, and I scrambled to wrestle it out of my jeans. I passed it to Indira, who was riding shotgun, and she peered at the screen.

“It’s Penny.” She grinned widely. “Shall I answer it?”

“Go ahead,” I chuckled. “I haven’t set up the Bluetooth function yet anyway.”

“Hi, Penny,” Indira answered the call with a knowing smirk on her face, and then she let out a giggle at the black-haired seer’s reaction on the other end of the line.

I watched in my peripheral vision as Indira nodded and chuckled a few times at whatever Penny said to her, and I couldn’t help the fact my grip on the steering wheel became tighter and tighter the more they spoke.

“Okay.” Indira nodded eagerly. “Yeah, absolutely. Okay. We’ll see you soon.
